Of course no visit to San Antonio, Texas would be complete without a visit to the Alamo.  The inner grounds are well landscaped with stone-paved paths around the grounds.  There is a museum set up in the barracks and a gift shop for the purchase of souvenirs as well as a display of cannons where stories are told of the history and of the famous battle that took place here.  There is a well shaded park across the street and plenty of shops,  restaurants and museums (very) nearby to make the visit downtown worth planning to spend the day there.
